“Hello, everyone,” he says. “I want to take a moment to tell you about our newest cat in the café! She has a beautiful, thick coat of white fur, and she is one of the biggest cats we’ve ever seen. She loves frosting and fighting. She’s very clumsy, like my sister, Kira. Her name is Dozer because she’s like a bulldozer, as you can see … uh-oh.”

As Ryan talks, Dozer seems to notice that all eyes in the café are on her. And she loves the attention! A little too much. She leaps from table to table. The customers pick up their mugs and plates so she won’t knock them over. Then she lands in front of Manuel. She sits down, stares right into his eyes, and—BAM! She uses her paw to knock his glass off the table. It shatters on the floor. Manuel covers his face, and Dozer goes back to fighting with one of the other cats.

I look down at the broken glass, then up again at Manuel’s covered face. I like Manuel and his family. I hope they’re not so mad they leave The Purrfect Cup.

But before I can say sorry and offer them free tea, the bell at the front of the café rings again. Oh no. Not more customers! They won’t be happy if we have no food and no glasses to serve water in.

I turn around and see Alex and Mrs. Patel in the doorway. Their eyes are wide.

Mrs. Patel looks over at the broken glass, the fighting cats in the middle of the room, and the almost-empty bakery case.

“Oh dear,” she says, pinching her nose. For the first time, I think it’s not because of her allergies. The fishy smell isn’t great.

I look back to Granny for help.

“What’s the matter?” she asks. “Want me to order a pizza?”

“No,” I say. “I want to take a cat nap.”
